October 2005....After being displaced by Hurricane Katrina (and losing all of their instruments), our friends The Hot 8 Brass Band are on a mission to "Save Our Brass". On Halloween night, they will march in the Village parade and then end up at Don Hill's in Soho, where we'll help them throw down the most kick-ass benefit party on record. Please join us for great music and a great cause. Here is the official event flyer and a New York Times article profiling the band.
September 2005....Ben Hoffstein (Clyde Coolidge) and Sam McIlvain (Slip Backbone) appear on Tryst's latest release, Hotel Two-Way. Pure tour de force. Get it at CD Baby or on iTunes.
August 2005....Joanna Fee (Dee Dee La Roq) has released her solo debut album "Blue Bird". It's the shiite - more details forthcoming.
July 2005....Shelly Bhushan (Loretta Frankford) has just released a solo EP, titled "The Shelly Show", on Redcard Records. Pick up your copy on CD Baby or iTunes and hit her up for an autograph at the next SPaNK show.
June 2005....Soul songstress Shelly Bhushan (Loretta Frankford) is blowing the roof off The Parkside Lounge every Tuesday night through the end of August. Special guests include Ben Hoffstein (Clyde Coolidge), Harcourt Cordew, and John Celentano (Johnny Caesar). Best of all, the bar is hip, the drinks are cheap, and admission is free. Be there.
April 2005....After many successful gigs on the Lightship Frying Pan, SPaNK has decided to up the ante and play on a ship that actually leaves the dock. Thus, we are proud to announce our next show -- SPaNK At Sea -- which will take place during a leisurely cruise around lower Manhattan and Lady Liberty. Here's a promotional flyer to seal the deal. Space is extremely limited, so make haste and buy those tickets now.
March 2005....After two years of lead-footed perfection, Johnny Caesar has announced his retirement from SPaNK to pursue other personal projects. The throne will be assumed by powerhouse Chicago-native Eric Johnson. Caesar's final show, on April 15th at Ace Of Clubs, is being dubbed "A Farewell To Arms" and will feature several tributes to the grunting genius.
Dec 2004....SPaNK will be headlining the "R&B: Past And Future" gala on Friday, January 21st, 2005. The show will take place at the Tribeca Rock Club and will also feature solo performances from Shelly Bhushan and Joanna Fee. Please join us for another legendary evening and be sure to grab your tickets before they sell out.
Nov 2004....SPaNK will appear live Monday night, Nov 22nd, at BB King's Blues Club as part of the "Trinity Of Funk" tribute. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are only $1!
Nov 2004....The third official SPaNKtacular will be held on the USS Funkboat - i.e. The Frying Pan - this Saturday, November 20th, 2004. Serving a tasty bouillabaisse of funk classics, soul serenades, and rare groove essentials, SPaNK will dish out another fine evening of shanties, panties, and dancefloor vigilantes.
Sep 2004....Clyde Coolidge and Johnny Caesar will be appearing this Saturday night with future R&B queen Shelly Bhushan at The Parkside Lounge. Show starts at 9:30, no cover. Brag to your grandkids that you saw us in the early days.
July 2004....Shelly Bhushan is once again taking the stage this coming weekend at CB's 313 Gallery as part of their "See And Be Scene" music festival. The show will take place on Sunday, July 18th, 2004 (festival starts at noon).
May 2004....Shelly Bhushan (aka Loretta Frankford), whose incredible vocal powers have graced many a SPaNK stage, will be headlining a big show at The Canal Room on Friday, June 18th. There are unconfirmed rumors that Clyde Coolidge and Johnny Caesar will be onhand as well.
April 2004....Always & Forever - Prom Night '64, '74, '84 was a massive success, with nearly 300 gown-clad people packing The Sun Factory. Despite the bottomless punch bowl and hazardous amount of funk emanating from the speakers, there were no casualties.
April 2004....Horns and backing vocals have now been recorded
for the upcoming SPaNK CD. Special thanks to the Furious Horns, Loretta Frankford, and DeeDee LaRoq
for providing such low-cost high-quality work. Stay tuned for the official release party.
Jan 2004....SPaNK has wrapped primary recording for the upcoming CD. Tracking was done at Motherwest Studios in Manhattan and mixing will take place at Quadratic Records.
